Syrian Arab unity 1958-1961

Abstract

       In 1958, Iraq and Syria merged to form the United Arab Republic,. This union was opposed by many Syrians, who feared Iraqi influence and wanted to preserve Syria's independence. In 1961, a rebellion broke out in Syria, leading to the collapse of the United Arab Republic. Former Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli returned to power, but he was unable to restore stability to the country. In 1963, a military coup occurred in Syria, overthrowing the Quwatli government. The coup was led by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, which advocated for the establishment of a socialist state in Syria.
