Homosexuality and Gender in Mesopotamia

Abstract

     The literature and arts of ancient Mesopotamia were full of references and images expressive of people's sexuality. The recognition and acceptance of the gender represented by both homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders was considered to be an exciting degree.

   When we examine the culture of Mesopotamian societies, we discover that these civilizations valued and respected a wide range of gender identities and sexual expressions. Ancient homosexuality may differ greatly from modern homosexuality, because it was represented in various forms, including the dominance of one man over another, as well as the desire of the other to become a male prostitute. One of the most prominent forms of homosexuality is sacred prostitution as part of the worship of Inanna/Ishtar. This openness and tolerance challenged traditional notions of gender and sexuality and provided an interesting glimpse into the historical acceptance of Members of the Queer community.
