The Identity in Naguib Mahfouz's Novels

Naguib Mahfouz is considered one of the most prominent novelists who embodied identity in Arabic literature. He managed to depict a clear image of the events within Arab society and its historical and cultural transformations. He utilized key elements that contribute to shaping identity, foremost among them being language, which he regarded as the primary factor distinguishing an individual's belonging. Following that is religion, which constitutes an essential part of the identity of both the individual and society. Another significant element is customs and traditions, which vary from one country to another. The sample for this study includes Mahfouz's most famous novels: The Trilogy, Midaq Alley, and The Thief and the Dogs, in which he addressed fundamental issues deeply rooted in the consciousness of Arab society, as well as the conflicts between individuals and the communities they live in.
