The Mandaean Sabeans represent an authentic part of the Iraqi fabric and its history, as their role has been prominent in the scientific and economic fields, as well as in promoting values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Although they historically enjoyed the freedom to practice their rituals, the United States invasion of Iraq in 2003, followed by deteriorating security and terrorist operations, forced many of them to emigrate. Nevertheless, the 2005 Constitution secured their political rights by granting them a seat within the quota system in the Council of Representatives, in recognition of their historical role and to ensure the continued diversity and stability of Iraqi society.
