Abstract

During World War II, Iraqi-British relations deteriorated as Iraq hesitated to sever ties with Italy, leading to British pressure to dismantle nationalist military factions. This interference sparked the 1941 coup and the formation of the "National Defense Government" under Al-Gaylani, backed by widespread popular and tribal support against British influence. Despite this resistance, Britain utilized propaganda tools like the "Brotherhood of Freedom Club" to regain control. Ultimately, Britain re-established its dominance, ushering in a new political era marked by constant challenges from the Iraqi national movement.
