Aspects of Poetry Criticism in the Works of Judge Ibn Abi Aqama Al-Yemeni
Abstract
This study aims to systematically examine the key aspects of poetry criticism in the book Jawāhir al-Akhbār wa Mulah al-Ashʿār by Judge Ibn Abi Aqama Al-Yemeni (d. around 480 AH) to determine his position within the field of literary criticism. To achieve this, the research identifies three primary critical approaches to classical Arabic poetry found in his work: error identification, textual borrowing (intertextuality), and comparative analysis. These aspects are analyzed using a descriptive-analytical methodology focused on critical phenomena.
The study ultimately presents a set of scholarly findings that reveal both the theoretical and applied dimensions of Ibn Abi Aqama’s critical approach. Furthermore, it highlights the intellectual influences shaping his perspective, demonstrating his engagement with the traditions of Arabic literary criticism. His methodology is reflected in the structure, composition, and stylistic features of his book.
